What is Drink Spiking?
Any type of sedating substance that is administered to a victim for criminal offenses without or against their knowledge is Drink Spiking. The best-known offenses in this context are sexual offenses such as rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse. However, they are also frequently used for other offenses such as robbery. In fact, these date rape drugs are not a single chemical compound, but can be several different drugs. The best known are liquid ectasy (GHB, scientifically: γ-hydroxybutyric acid) and ketamine.
However, certain groups of drugs such as antihistamines, anticholinergics and neuroleptics such as the well-known haloperidol can also be abused in Drink Spiking. In total, there are more than 100 organic chemical compounds from industry, medicines and drugs that can be used to anaesthetize people.
How is Drink Spiking administered?
In most cases, Drink Spiking is administered by pouring them into drinks. The perpetrators do this while the chosen victim is distracted or actively occupied by an accomplice. Recently, however, there have also been a large number of reports of Drink Spikes being inconspicuously administered to victims with a syringe, for example on crowded dance floors - so-called needle spiking. However, the veracity of these cases is disputed. Theoretically, it is also possible that the drugs are administered via other surfaces, food or other drugs or that they are vaporized and thus absorbed through breathing. The common properties of these agents are what make them so dangerous. All substances are colorless and odorless and therefore cannot be perceived. They cannot be recognized even after several sips of a drink. Although they have a salty to soapy taste on their own, this is completely lost in the popular mixed drinks in particular. The necessary doses also make them very difficult to detect in other drinks. How do knockout drops work? In very small quantities, knockout drops have a stimulating and sexually arousing effect, which is why they are sometimes taken intentionally by drug users. However, as the goal is not the same, the substances are defined as "normal" drugs in this case. In slightly higher doses, they cause coordination disorders, dizziness and fatigue. If a certain limit is exceeded, which varies depending on the drug used, the victim even loses consciousness. In this situation, the affected person is then completely defenceless and does not wake up even when in severe pain. From this point onwards, memory loss is also common, although this can also occur without unconsciousness. In the case of an overdose, respiratory paralysis and death are possible with many drugs. In combination with other drugs or alcohol, the effects are often intensified and even lower doses can lead to these serious consequences.
How can Spiked Drinks be detected?
The vast majority of Drink Spikes are quickly broken down and are then no longer detectable. Liquid ecstasy can only be detected in blood and urine for a few hours. Whether detection is possible via hair analysis is highly controversial among experts. The substance is produced in the body itself in extremely small quantities and a single administration could only exceed this level by so little that it cannot be reliably distinguished from it. Directly in a liquid, however, the amount may be sufficient to knock the person out. Detection directly after the crime is also often difficult - because many victims do not dare to go to the police immediately out of ignorance or shame. In addition, due to the confusion that sets in after anterograde amnesia, people also need some time to even realize what might have happened to them. The easiest way to detect date rape drugs is before they are administered, as tests such as the DrinkCheck knockout drops rapid test show whether a drink has been tampered with in this way. How can I protect myself from Spiked Drinks? There are numerous tips in information brochures and on the Internet on how to protect yourself against Spiked Drinks. Never leave your own drink unattended and, if in doubt, pour it away. Open drinks from unknown people should never be accepted. Anyone who feels sick or unwell should leave the premises immediately with close friends and it is better to call an ambulance once too often than once too little. Private events in particular, but also discos, bars or clubs, should also never be attended alone or with only casual acquaintances. These tips do offer a certain degree of security. However, criminals operate with particular sophistication and are often very charming on the outside. They know how to conceal their true interests, manipulate people and can thus tip something into a glass without being disturbed. At this point, a test, such as the DrinkCheck Drink Spike rapid test, is an additional and effective way of ensuring that Spiked Drinks can be detected easily.
Which Drink Spike tests are available?
Two different test options are widely available on the market: Bracelets and test strips. Bracelets are placed around the arm, but only react to the chemical GHB and therefore not even to the most common drug used in Drink Spiking, which is Ketamine. As they are attached to the arm, they are sensitive to splashing water and other contaminants. Although there is an integrated pH test, it is only supposed to react to pure water. However, as the test areas are not clearly marked on many products and some products even have the GHB test and the water test in the same color, this can quickly lead to serious confusion on wet and happy evenings. In some cases, the manufacturers do not reveal exactly what the chemical reaction to the color change looks like, which prevents a complete examination of the effectiveness. A test strip, such as the DrinkCheck Drink Spike rapid test, is much simpler and better. Ketamine is also integrated into the test and the regent is integrated safely so that splash water and other liquids cannot harm it. It is also kept simple and anyone is able to use and understand it. It only needs to be removed from the secure packaging when it is actually needed, it is much more durable and for this reason alone is cheaper than the comparatively expensive wristbands.
DrinkCheck Drink Spike rapid test for the detection of ketamine and GHB
The DrinkCheck Drink Spike rapid test enables all partygoers, club friends and bar enthusiasts to test for the two most frequently encountered Drink Spikes. The test strip, which is just 8 cm long, has two test areas for ketamine and GHB and therefore helps with the most frequently used knockout drops. It is very easy to use: simply open the pack at the prefabricated points and remove the test. The two pink and yellow test dots are each intended for one of the two substances, which is why the agent used can be precisely identified. Then use a straw or your fingernail to apply a drop to each area and wait for about 15 seconds. If one of the test areas changes color and turns orange or blue, the respective substance has been detected. If both change color, the drink contains both substances. The important thing now is to leave the glass or bottle, warn your friends and call the police.
The waterproof packaging measuring just 11.1 x 6.1 x 0.1 cm with a total weight of 2 grams makes it possible to carry the Drink Spike Test in any purse, handbag or trouser pocket and thus have it with you at every planned and unplanned event. This provides lasting protection for the user.
To guarantee quality, the test has been validated by two independent bodies: The UK Clinical Trials Laboratory Services (CTLS) and the University of Strathclyde.
